A West Bengal CID official claimed on Wednesday that Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anar was allegedly smothered with a pillow shortly after he entered a flat in New Town, Kolkata, where he was killed.
During investigation, the accused Mohammad Siyam Hussain, who was arrested in Nepal, admitted that he, along with a woman, helped others in strangling the Bangladeshi politician, according to the official.
According to reports, the woman is said to be Akhtaruzzaman’s girlfriend, who is a US national and the alleged main suspect in the case.
The official informed the news agency PTI that after killing the MP, they cut his body into small pieces, placed them in plastic bags, and then disposed of them in various locations in New Town, including the Bagjola canal, before fleeing to different hideouts.
Meanwhile, investigators continued their search for the body parts.
When was the case of Bangladesh MP disclosed
The incident was discovered when Gopal Biswas, a resident of Baranagar in north Kolkata and an acquaintance of the Bangladeshi politician, reported Anar missing to the local police on May 18. He mentioned that the MP had arrived in the city on May 12.
In his complaint, Biswas stated that Anar left Biswas’ residence in Baranagar for a doctor’s appointment in the afternoon of May 13 but did not return home for dinner as expected.
Anar had been staying at Biswas’ residence since arriving in Kolkata.
On June 9, the state CID found human bone fragments near a canal in South 24 Parganas district.
Later, they interrogated Siyam, who Nepal Police had arrested and extradited to India.
The CID also questioned the butcher who had dismembered the body.
Initial investigation in the case found that the MP’s close friend, Akhtaruzzaman, allegedly paid around Rs 5 crore to those who carried out the crime.
CID officers said Akhtaruzzaman owns a flat in Kolkata and is likely in the US currently.
