Amir Sarfaraz Tamba, a close associate of Hafiz Saeed, murdered Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Kot Lakhpat jail in 2013. Tamba strangled Sarabjit to death with polythene and physical force. However, Tamba himself was shot dead by unidentified attackers in Pakistan on Sunday. Now, a police officer from Punjab province in Pakistan has asserted that Sarfaraz Tamba is alive despite previous reports of his demise.
Motorcycle-riding assailants attacked Tamba, a close associate of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed, at his residence in Sanant Nagar. He was critically injured and taken to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. However, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Lahore Syed Ali Raza claimed to Dawn newspaper that Tamba is still alive but seriously wounded. Interestingly, the police officer chose not to disclose the location where Tamba has been transferred for medical treatment.
When PTI contacted Lahore Police spokesperson Farhan Shah regarding the SSP’s statement on Monday, Shah declined to comment, citing the sensitivity of the matter.
Amir Sarfaraz Tamba Is Still Alive
Against this backdrop, Pakistan’s Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Monday voiced suspicions about India’s involvement in Sarfaz Tamba’s murder. Addressing the media, he alleged that India has directly participated in previous murder cases. The police are investigating the incident, and it is premature to comment on India’s role at this stage. However, they are suspicious due to the recurring patterns observed in past killings.
On Sunday afternoon, two unknown assailants shot and killed Tamba at his residence in Sanant Nagar, an affluent area in Old Lahore. Images showing Tamba’s bloodied body quickly spread on social media. Junaid Sarfaraz, Tamba’s younger brother, filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the unknown attackers.
According to the FIR, Junaid Sarfaraz reported that he and his elder brother Amir Sarfaraz Tamba, aged around 40, were present at their home in Sanant Nagar during the incident.
Tamba killed Sarabjit Singh in jai
In 2013, Sarfaraz Tamba and his associate Mudassar attacked death row convict Sarabjit in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail, resulting in Sarabjit’s death. In 2018, the Lahore Sessions Court acquitted Sarabjit’s killers due to insufficient evidence.
Authorities sentenced Sarabjit Singh to death for his alleged involvement in serial bomb blasts in Pakistan’s Punjab province in 1990. He hailed from Bhikhiwind village in Tarn Taran district near the India-Pakistan border. Sarabjit’s family in India claimed that he accidentally crossed the border, leading to his arrest by the Pakistani Army on August 30, 1990. Sarabjit himself asserted his innocence in a letter, stating that he was a poor farmer mistaken for someone else. Despite Dalbir Kaur’s efforts to secure her brother’s release from Pakistan, she was unsuccessful.
