Ratan Tata is a household name in India, known for his leadership of the Tata Group from 1990 to 2012. After J.R.D. Tata, who led the group for over 50 years, chose Ratan Tata as his successor, he became even more prominent. However, not many are aware of Ratan Tata’s younger half-brother, Jimmy Tata. Jimmy bears a strong resemblance to Ratan but lives a much more low-key life. While Ratan Tata enjoys fame and media attention for his leadership and simplicity, Jimmy Tata prefers a simple and unassuming lifestyle, away from the public eye.
Did you know of Ratan Tata’s younger brother Jimmy Tata who lives a quiet reticent life in a humble 2 bhk flat in Colaba, Mumbai! Never interested in business, he was a very good squash player and would beat me every time.

It’s not that Jimmy Tata lacks wealth. He holds a nearly equal stake in Tata Sons compared to Ratan Tata. A recent report stated that Tata Sons’ investments in listed companies amount to around ₹16 lakh crore. Jimmy Tata leads a rather simple life, avoiding media attention and not seeking publicity. The media covered Jimmy Tata notably when Ratan Tata posted a childhood picture of them together on his Instagram account. Ratan Tata has 9.2 million followers on Instagram. After that picture surfaced, people became more curious about the person nearly identical to Ratan Tata. Ratan Tata revealed that the picture was taken in 1945.
According to various media reports, Jimmy Naval Tata manages several businesses but prefers a simple life. Despite owning assets worth ₹12,000 crore, Jimmy Tata still resides in a 2-bedroom apartment in the Colaba area of Mumbai. He lives on the sixth floor of Hampton Court in Colaba. It’s said that many residents in the same building are unaware of his presence. Additionally, he doesn’t own a mobile phone. In such a scenario, he might prefer spending his time reading books and newspapers.
Last year, Indian industrialist Harsh Goenka shared a social media post praising Jimmy Tata. He mentioned that Jimmy Tata is an excellent squash player who often defeats him in matches.
Jimmy Tata holds stakes in various Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Tata Sons, Tata Power, Indian Hotels, and Tata Chemicals.
