1899: Freedom fighter Kamala Nehru was born
Kamala Nehru was an Indian independence activist and the wife of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. Her daughter Indira Gandhi was the first female Prime Minister of India.
1920: Death anniversary of Freedom Fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak
Bal Gangadhar Tilak endeared as Lokmanya, was an Indian nationalist, teacher, and an independence activist. He was one third of the Lal Bal Pal triumvirate. Tilak was the first leader of the Indian independence movement. The British colonial authorities called him “The father of the Indian unrest”. He was also conferred with the title of “Lokmanya”, which means “accepted by the people as their leader”.Mahatma Gandhi called him “The Maker of Modern India”.
1933 – Birthday of Indian actress Meena Kumari
Meena Kumari was an Indian actress and poet, who worked in Hindi films. Popularly known as The Tragedy Queen,she was active between 1939 and 1972. Kumari was described by critics as a “historically incomparable” actress of Hindi cinema. In a career spanning 33 years, she starred in over 90 films till her premature death in 1972.
1987 – Birthday of Indian actress Taapsee Pannu
Taapsee Pannu is the recipient of two Filmfare Awards. After a brief modelling career, Pannu made her acting debut with the 2010 Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam and went on to act in the 2011 Tamil film Aadukalam. She made her Hindi film debut with David Dhawan’s comedy Chashme Baddoor. After playing the leading lady in several Telugu and Tamil films, Pannu gained notice for her performances in the Hindi spy film Baby (2015) and the courtroom drama Pink (2016), both of which were critical and commercial successes.
