Ambedkar Jayanti 2023: Every year on April 14, the birth anniversary of DR. B.R. Ambedkar is observed and it is also known as Ambedkar Jayanti, Bhim Jayanti or B.R. Ambedkar Remembrance Day. Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar is one of the leading national builders in our country. This year, his 132nd birth anniversary will be celebrated by every Indian. 

DR. B.R. Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, India, into a Dalit Mahar family. He was an economist, lecturer, and lawyer who fought against a social injustice against the untouchables. B.R. Ambedkar took his last breath on December 6, 1956, and later, in 1990, he was granted India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.

Ambedkar’s life has been the basis of several works, which are presented in movies, plays and books. He’s been the subject of films in many languages. His films are also released in many other regional languages such as Marathi, and Kannada. On the occasion of his birth anniversary, here are some of his famous films.

1. ‘Bal Bhimrao’

This Marathi biographical film ‘Bal Bhimrao’ is directed by filmmaker Prakash Narayan Jadhav in 2018. The film stars Mohan Joshi, Vikram Gokhale, Kishori Shahane Vij, and Prema Kiran. The film focuses on the younger days of Ambedkar, and how his thinking guides him to become this great Dalit leader, who has helped India in its freedom struggle.

2. ‘Ramabai Bhimrao Ambedkar’

In 2011, Prakash Jadhav’s Marathi film Ramabai Bhimrao Ambedkar has been released, which focused on Ambedkar and his wife. The film cast Nisha Parulekar, Ganesh Jethe, Dashrath Hatiskar, and Snehal Velankar.

This film shows how his wife Ramabai Ambedkar kept Dr. B.R. Ambedkar motivated and stood by his side like a solid rock to uplift the needy classes of the country. Knowingly and unknowingly, her views and ideologies also helped India in its freedom struggle.

 

3. ‘Dr BR Ambedkar’

This Kannada biographical film is directed by Sharan Kumar Kabbur in 2005. The stars Vishnukanth B.J. as Dr BR Ambedkar, while Tara is seen as his first wife, Ramabai Ambedkar, and Bhavya plays his second wife, Savita Ambedkar. The film focused on his life journey from his childhood to his last days. This movie won numerous Kannada State Awards.

 

4. ‘Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’

This feature film Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar is directed by Jabbar Patel in the year 2000. In this film, Mammootty portrayed the titular part. The film showcases his college time at Columbia University, and then how he gets into the freedom struggle. The film has covered many more topics about his journey.

The film has also received many awards including National Film Awards for Best English Feature Film, Best Actor for Mammootty, and Best Art Direction for Nitin Chandrakant Desai.

5. ‘Bhim Garjana’

This Marathi film ‘Bhim Garjana’ is directed by Sudhakar Waghmare in 1989. The film cast actors Krishnanand and Pratima Devi. The story of the film says about his many ideas about what India’s future should look like and what he thought while drafting the first version of the Indian Constitution.
