In Charsadda town, authorities intervened to prevent the marriage of a 12-year-old girl to a 72-year-old man, leading to the arrest of the groom.
According to police, the girl’s father, Alam Syed, had arranged to sell her to the elderly man for PKR 500,000. Just before the ‘Nikkah’ ceremony, authorities intervened, arresting the 72-year-old groom, identified as Habib Khan, and the ‘Nikah Khwan’ (the person who solemnizes the marriage). However, the girl’s father managed to flee the scene.
However, according to reports, a case has been registered under the Child Marriage Act against the girl’s father, the 72-year-old man, and the ‘Nikah Khwan’.
Despite laws against child marriage, such incidents persist in Pakistan. Recently, law enforcement agencies foiled similar attempts in Rajanpur and Thatta, where young girls were being forced to marry older men. In Rajanpur, Punjab, an 11-year-old girl was set to marry a 40-year-old man. In another case, a young girl in Thatta was forcibly married to a 50-year-old landlord, but she was saved thanks to the timely intervention of the police.

On May 6, police arrested a 70-year-old man for marrying a 13-year-old girl in Swat. Upon receiving information, authorities acted swiftly, detaining both the groom and the girl’s father, who had arranged the marriage.
The ‘Nikah Khwan’ and the marriage witnesses were also arrested, while the minor girl was sent to a hospital for a medical examination.
