LCD Vs OLED Screens: Will Apple Replace LCDs with OLEDs for All iPhones by 2025?

LCD Vs OLED Screens: Amid all the rumours, leaks and buzz about the upcoming iPhone 16, a report by Nikkei Asia suggests that Apple will bring a big change to its flagship devices by 2025. The report claims that Apple will bid adieu to the LCD screens and will replace them with OLED screens in all its iPhone models. The OLED screens offer bright colours and sharp images.

The tech giant has used the LCD screens in some of its devices that are less expensive including the iPhone SE, and other older generation iPhones. If OLED screens come in place, it will also mark the exit of two Japanese companies Japan Display (JDI) and Sharp, that currently create screens for iPhones.

LCD Vs OLED Screens

OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology has becoming increasingly popular, thanks to the better picture quality it offers compared to LCDs, which are liquid crystal displays. Unlike LCDs that need a backlight, OLEDs can produce their own light. This is the reason why the OLEDs make screens thinner, display better colours and are more energy-efficient. They are great for playing games and watching videos on smartphones.

Back in 2017, Apple first used OLED screen in iPhone X and after that it has been using them for its higher-end models. For more affordable models, it has been using the LCDs.

End of Road for LCDs in Apple iPhones?

Once Apple switches to OLED screens for all its iPhones by 2025, it will be an end of road for LCDs in its smartphones. The company is expected to make this move owing to the growing demand for better picture quality, and more efficient and thinner screens.

Big Blow to Japanese Suppliers

JDI and Sharp have been the major suppliers of LCD screens for iPhones, the report says. These companies provided 70 per cent of the screens used in iPhones about 10 years ago. Their business with Apple dropped drastically after Apple began to use more OLEDs.

Since JDI and Sharp do not create OLED screens in large quantity, they might not be a part of Apple’s future plans as the tech giant will most likely turn to brands like South Korea’s Samsung and LG and China’s BOE.
