New Delhi: Gujarat Giants (GG) announced South African opener Laura Wolvaardt as the replacement of captain and wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney for the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Wednesday.

Laura Wolvaardt to replace Beth Mooney

Laure Wolvaardt, was featuring in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Women’s League exhibition matches, was released by the released by her ‘Super Women’ team on Wednesday.

Wolvaardt had smashed unbeaten 53 for her team in Women’s league. She had just played one match and after that she was released by her franchise.

“I want to thank the PCB for this opportunity to play in the Women’s League exhibition matches. It has been an incredible short journey, but I have loved the experience. The team has been amazing and I have felt so welcoming. I wish both sides the best of luck with rest of the series,” Laura Wolvaardt said in her statement.

I am sure both sides will strive hard and they will do well and learn a lot from the experience they will get from the matches. I cannot wait to return to Pakistan in September with the South Africa’s national women’s team and learning more about this amazing country,” Laura Wolvaardt added.

Meanwhile, Wolvaardt is coming back from her successful T20 World Cup campaign, that was hosted by South Africa. She was the highest run-getter in the tournament with 230 runs. The right-hand batter, struck half-centuries in semi-final and final against England and Australia.

But unfortunately, she went unsold in the WPL auction. Her base price was 30 lakh INR.

Sneha Rana: Captain of GG

GG appointed stand-in-skipper Sneha Rana as replacement of injured Beth Mooney.

Mooney, who suffered knee injury against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the first match of the tournament. The Australian star batter, sustained the injury while taking a single in the first over itself.

“I was really looking forward to the maiden WPL season… but unfortunately injuries are part and parcel of the sport and I am gutted to be missing the remainder of the season,” Mooney said in a statement.

“I will be keeping a close eye on the team’s performance from afar and will be rooting for them every single day,” she added.

“Though I will be away from the field of play for the rest of the season, I am looking forward to coming back stronger, fitter and I will definitely be hungrier next season,” Mooney concluded.
