Months after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season ended, uncertainty surrounds MS Dhoni’s future with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Dhoni stepped down as CSK’s captain before the season, allowing Ruturaj Gaikwad to take the helm. Despite CSK missing the playoffs, Gaikwad’s leadership showed promise. However, Dhoni’s fate as a player hinges on the IPL management and BCCI’s retention policy decisions.
A mega auction is set for IPL 2025, but the number of players each franchise can retain remains unclear. According to Cricbuzz, Dhoni’s continuation as a player depends on the BCCI permitting franchises to retain 5 to 6 players. Currently, CSK is likely to retain Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube, though the order of retention is yet to be finalized.

Reports indicate that IPL officials have scheduled a meeting on July 31 with franchise owners to discuss retention policies. IPL CEO Hemang Amin reportedly invited owners via text messages, though the exact time and venue were initially unspecified.
‘Amin suggested the meeting would occur in the late afternoon or evening on July 31, and all owners confirmed their attendance,’ a report noted. The meeting is expected to take place at the BCCI headquarters in the Wankhede Stadium complex, Mumbai.
The possibility of retaining 5-6 players per franchise will be a critical topic at this meeting, potentially influencing Dhoni’s future with CSK. The outcome could determine whether Dhoni, known as ‘Thala,’ will continue his illustrious career in the IPL.
