Joe Root is going through one of the best phases in his Test career. Being one of the Fab Four of modern cricket with Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, and Steve Smith, Root has more Test runs against his name than his contemporaries. Recently, he created a new record, overtaking Alastair Cook’s 33 centuries to become England’s leading century-maker. However, in the third and final Test against Sri Lanka the other day, his scores were a mere 12 and 13 in both innings as England lost by eight wickets.
Joe Root Very Crucial For England
Former England captain Michael Vaughan became very frustrated with the way England batted during the match and hence came up with the reactions below. The 82-Test player Vaughan pointed out that the clear and present concern is how much the team relies on Root.
“This week really hit home to me how important Joe Root is to this batting lineup. His batting is the key. All these flamboyant players around him get flamboyant fifties. But without the glue at No 4 getting the huge amount of runs he does, they are knackered,” Vaughan wrote in his column for Telegraph.
Jasprit Bumrah- A Threat For Joe Root, Says Vaughan
Vaughan is of the view that Joe Root cannot always be trusted to bail them out because he ‘obviously’ struggles against Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah and Australian captain Pat Cummins. Besides, he also mentioned that even with his decent record elsewhere, he has yet to secure a century in Australia.

“He can’t do it every week, and he didn’t do it this week. Jasprit Bumrah enjoys bowling at Root, and could severely limit his output next summer. The same goes for Pat Cummins in Australia, where Root has never scored a hundred. England have to have ways of succeeding when Root doesn’t make big runs. On the basis of this game, they don’t,” he added.
Although Root has played 14 Tests in Australia, Joe Root is still waiting for a century. He has scored nine half-centuries and 892 runs at an average of 35.68.
