Hardik’s Homecoming
In the IPL 2024 opener against his former team, the Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to field. Before the toss, the Gujarat Titans, winners of the IPL once, included three players in their squad: senior Indian pacer Umesh Yadav, Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai, and Australian fast bowler Spencer Johnson. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians filled three of their four overseas player slots with Australia’s Tim David, South Africa’s Gerald Coetzee, and England’s Luke Wood, while all-rounder Shams Mulani made his debut.
Bumrah’s absence during the 2023 season was strongly felt by the Mumbai Indians. He was sidelined due to a back injury and underwent significant rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The nature of his injury, often resulting from strains, sprains, or fractures caused by falls, sudden twists, or trauma, raised doubts about his participation.
