Match 5 of the Indian Premier League witnessed Hardik Pandya’s Mumbai Indians lose their opening game once again, this time against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 24. GT won the tie by 6 runs on the night.
It proved to be a rewarding return for Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya who shifted base ahead of the new season.
Put to bat first, GT openers Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill started to pile the pressure on MI going with a 10-run-per over rate in the first 3 overs. However, it was Jasprit Bumrah who got Mumbai their first breakthrough with a stunning Yorker to dismiss Saha on just 19.
Newly appointed GT skipper Shubman Gill (31) was also sent back to the pavilion soon courtesy of a Piyush Chawla delivery.
Saw Sudharshan top-scored for the Titans with a resilient 45 as Gujarat put up a competitive total of 168/6 on the board.
Jasprit Bumrah had a great return to the IPL with figures of 3/14.

Former Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma tried his best to take the chase forward with a 29-ball 43 but failed to finish things off for his side. The same was the case for Dewald Brevis who scored a 38-ball 46 but got out in the 16th over.
In the end, it was skipper Hardik Pandya (4-ball 11) who was left with the unfinished task for the 5-time winners. However, the former Gujarat man couldn’t help Mumbai claim their first opening tie win in the IPL after 11 seasons.
The experienced Umesh Yadav bowled a brilliant death over, dismissing Hardik in the process as well.
