IPL 2024: Body Blow For Lucknow Super Giants, Star Pacer Pulls Out

The English left-arm seamer played the last two IPL seasons with Royal Challengers Bangalore and was set to play for LSG this year after being signed at his base price of Rs 2 crore (about £190,000) at December's auction in Dubai.

Lucknow Super Giants have been dealt a body blow ahead of the season which starts from March 22.  LSG head coach Justin Langer said that English pacer David Willey will miss the start of the season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to personal reasons.

The English left-arm bowler participated in the last two IPL seasons with Royal Challengers Bangalore and was slated to join LSG this year after being acquired at his base price of Rs 2 crore (approximately £190,000) during December’s auction in Dubai.

However, Justin Langer, the new head coach of LSG, revealed on Wednesday that Willey would not be available for the beginning of the season. This decision came after Willey spent the preceding two months playing for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders and Multan Sultans in the ILT20 and PSL tournaments respectively.

Willey becomes the second English player to face absence at the start of LSG’s season, following Mark Wood’s suspension by the ECB for the entire season to manage his workload ahead of the T20 World Cup. Wood has been replaced by Shamar Joseph, a fast bowler from the West Indies, while Willey’s replacement is yet to be announced.

Justin Langer Gives Update On Willey

“With Mark Wood pulling out of the tournament and also David Willey won’t be coming now either, that means we lack some experience,” Langer said, when asked about LSG’s pace attack.

“But what I’ve also seen in the last couple of days is that we have enormous talent. Some of our guys have had some injuries but they all look very fit at the moment. They look fit and healthy and they’re very hungry, so we’ll just have to manage them well so that we can get them through and work through the whole tournament, not just the start of the tournament. We’ve got one overseas player up our sleeve if required, where we might be able to add some experience.”

Langer also highlighted Mayank Yadav, a 21-year-old fast bowler from Delhi, as a genuine pace option who could provide additional speed in the absence of Mark Wood. “Mark Wood is undoubtedly a top-tier bowler, isn’t he? It’s disappointing that he withdrew after the auction, but such is the reality of the world we inhabit,” Langer remarked.
