Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin reached a significant milestone in his Test career by becoming the first Indian player to claim 100 wickets against England in Test cricket. Additionally, he joined the ranks of only three other players in cricket history to achieve the feat of taking 100 wickets and scoring over 1000 runs in Test matches.
Ashwin accomplished this feat during the fourth Test against England in Ranchi, when he dismissed Jonny Bairstow in the opening session. Bairstow’s wicket was crucial as he and Joe Root had formed a resilient partnership of 52 runs after India’s debutant fast bowler Akash Deep rattled England’s top order with three early wickets.

Special Double List
1. Gary Sobers (West Indies) – 3214 runs and 102 wickets vs England
2. Monty Noble (Australia) – 1905 runs and 115 wickets vs England
3. Giffen (Australia) – 1238 runs and 103 wickets vs England
4. R Ashwin (India) – 1085 runs and 100 wickets vs England
Ashwin’s delivery from around the wicket led to Bairstow being trapped LBW while attempting a sweep. Initially given not out by umpire Kumar Dharmasena, Rohit Sharma’s decision to review the decision proved successful, providing India with a vital breakthrough.
Only James Anderson, with 145 wickets, has taken more wickets in Test matches between India and England.
On the same day, Akash Deep made an impressive start to his Test career by claiming three wickets in his initial spell. Despite the setback of a no-ball blunder which negated his dismissal of Zak Crawley, Akash Deep managed to dismiss Ollie Pope, Crawley, and Ben Duckett, demonstrating his immediate impact in Test cricket.
