Rovman Powell, the West Indies’ limited-overs skipper, made quite a splash at the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai. Starting at a base price of Rs 1 crore, the all-rounder sparked a fierce bidding war between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Rajasthan Royals (RR). In the end, the Royals emerged victorious, securing Powell for a staggering Rs 7.4 crore, utilizing half of their allotted purse.

As the auction kicked off, the Knight Riders initiated the bidding, swiftly followed by RR. The battle escalated rapidly, with the two franchises aggressively vying for Powell’s services. When the bidding reached Rs 7.4 crore, the Knight Riders withdrew, allowing the Royals to clinch the deal for the Caribbean all-rounder.

Previously picked up by Delhi Capitals in 2022 for Rs 2.8 crore, Powell had a noteworthy season, featuring in 14 matches and scoring 250 runs with a strike rate of 149.70. However, his appearances dwindled in the following year, participating in only three games and tallying 7 runs along with a wicket. Consequently, he was released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2024 auctions.
