Ravichandran Ashwin believes that the high scores frequently recorded in this IPL 2024 season are not solely due to the impact player rule but also because of the evolution of batters. The premier Indian spinner has also encouraged bowlers to improve their batting skills to meet the game’s demands.

Record-Breaking IPL  2024

This season has seen remarkable batting performances, with teams surpassing the 200-run mark 41 times and the 250-run mark eight times during the league stage. The IPL’s record for the highest team total, 287 runs, was also set in the current edition.

“Even if the impact player rule wasn’t there, scores would be this high,” Ashwin said on JioCinema Match Centre Live after their four-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL Eliminator, here on Wednesday.

“In my opinion, batters have more confidence, and pitches everywhere have been standardized.” “In the future, all bowlers will need to be hitters because we know that no matter how well we bowl, we also need to be able to bat. The game is headed in that direction,” he said.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has criticized the impact player rule, arguing that it hinders the development of all-rounders in the country. Star batter Virat Kohli has also expressed concerns, stating that it disrupts the balance of the game.

The impact player rule was officially introduced in the 2023 IPL season after being tested in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a domestic T20 tournament.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah recently mentioned that the impact player rule is being implemented on a ‘test case’ basis and is not permanent. He also said that board authorities will consult with stakeholders before making a final decision on the controversial rule.
