New Delhi: Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina has announced his retirement from all formats of cricket on Tuesday. The 35-year-old took to social media platform Twitter to make the announcement. He had retired from international cricket back in 2020 only but continued playing in IPL.

Here are the 10 facts about Suresh Raina you didn’t know about:

  1. Kashmiri roots

Suresh Raina’s father Trilok Chand is from Rainawari in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. His mother is from Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh. However, his family settled in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Raina has 4 siblings having three elder brothers named, Dinesh, Mukesh, and Naresh. He also has a sister named Renu.

2. At 16, an India Under-19 debut

Raina was just 16 when he was first selected to represent India Under-19s on a tour to England. In his debut match, Suresh scored 72 in an unofficial four-day Test for a team led by Manvinder Bisla and featuring Ambati Rayudu and Irfan Pathan, his future India teammates. Tim Bresnan was a prominent face in that England team

3. A duck on India debut

Raina was called into the senior Indian team at the age of 18 after his success in domestic cricket. Suresh’s international debut was not a day to remember as against Sri Lanka at Dambulla on July 30, 2005, the left-hand batsman was dismissed very first ball by none other than Muttiah Muralitharan. Getting a duck on his ODI debut put him in the company of Sachin Tendulkar and Shikhar Dhawan.

4. Youngest to lead India in T20

Raina is the youngest player to captain India in T20 internationals. He captained India for the first time when he was 23. He also happens to be the second oldest to lead India in ODIs, behind Sachin Tendulkar.

5. ‘A Bollywood Singer’

Raina is not only a cricketer but also a singer. He has sung a song in a 2015 Bollywood movie named ‘Meeruthiya Gangsters’. Suresh made his Bollywood singing debut with the romantic song ‘Tu Mili Sab Mila’.

This song was released on 18th September 2015 by Zee Music Company. Raina said that his friend Shoeb Ahmed ( Producer of this film) and his wife Priyanka Raina convinced him to utilize this opportunity.

6. Mr. IPL

Suresh Raina is known as Mr. IPL. He got this title because of his consistent performance and astonishing records in the Indian Premier League. He has the following records in IPL:-

1. Most catches by any fielder in IPL (102).
2. Most runs in IPL finals.
3. First and only player to have scored over 400 runs in 7 consecutive (2008-2014) IPL seasons.
4. Third highest run-scorer of IPL and maybe he was the highest scorer of IPL if he played the IPL season 2020
5. Most consecutive appearances for a team in IPL (158).
6. Most runs scored in the power play by any player in an IPL match.
7. He played an integral role in taking the franchise to the knockouts nine times
8. Leading run-scorer for CSK

7. A vocational chef

Raina has said in a few interviews that he likes cooking. Suresh has revealed that during his first tour as a captain of the Indian team, he had cooked for the whole team along with Ashok Dinda.

8. First Indian to score a century in every format

Raina had hit a century on his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2010, he became the first Indian to record a century in each format of international cricket. Raina had hit his first ODI ton against Hong Kong in the Asia Cup 2008. His, and India’s, first T20I century came against South Africa in the 2010 ICC World T20 in the West Indies.

9. The UP sports hostel setup

Raina had to leave Ghaziabad and move to Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, to join one of the state’s sports hostels. Suresh arrived there in 1999 and worked his way up the age groups. According to the rules, he was allowed to keep his room in the hostel for up to seven years. It was only in 2006, when he was already an India player, that Raina vacated it.

10. First Indian cricketer to score 8000 runs in T20 cricket

Raina is the first Indian cricketer to score 8000 runs in T20 cricket. Currently, Virat Kohli (10,273), Rohit Sharma (9,895), and Shikhar Dhawan (8,775) have more T20 runs than him. Suresh has 8,654 runs in T20 cricket having 126* as his highest score.
