World Autism Awareness Day 2023: The purpose of World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) is to raise awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and the challenges that individuals with ASD encounter on a daily basis. The day is observed annually on April 2 to raise awareness of the neurodevelopmental disease that impairs social and communication abilities.

What is Autism?

A neurological disease known as autism, it is characterised by limited language communication abilities, repetitive behaviours, and little interest in the outside world.

Autism spectrum condition can cause speech delays or restricted verbal communication in both children and adults.

World Autism Awareness Day: History & Significance

Since its foundation, the United Nations has worked to promote the rights and welfare of people with disabilities. The United Nations declared April 2 to be commemorated as International Autism Awareness Day in 2008.

The UN resolution was approved on November 1 and ratified on December 18, 2007. Since then, April 2 has been designated as World Autism Awareness Day annually.

The day is one of only seven recognised UN Days dedicated specifically to health.

People with autism frequently experience prejudice and difficulties that go unacknowledged by society. As a result, the World Autism Awareness Day is observed to promote ASD awareness and encourage people to consider methods to enhance the lives and general wellbeing of ASD sufferers.

World Autism Awareness Day 2023 Theme

The theme for World Autism Awareness Day 2023 is “Transforming the narrative: Contributions at home, at work, in the arts and in policymaking.”

The goal of this year’s theme is to support autistic persons in reclaiming their self-worth and dignity so they can participate fully in society.
