New Delhi: India is a land of diverse landscapes and hidden gems, waiting to be explored. In this journey of discovery, we delve into the allure of Sheshnag Lake, the therapeutic hot springs of Chumathang, and the secluded natural pond in Jibhi. These breathtaking destinations offer a glimpse into the natural wonders that adorn India’s vast terrain.

Sheshnag Lake: A mystical marvel

Elevation: 3590 meters
Location: Anantnag district, Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Kashmir, India

Nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of Anantnag district in Kashmir Valley, Sheshnag Lake stands as an alpine high-elevation marvel. At an elevation of 3590 meters, this oligotrophic lake is a sight to behold. It spans approximately 1.1 kilometers in length and 0.7 kilometers in width. But what makes Sheshnag Lake truly captivating is its intriguing origin.

Enigmatic origins

In ancient times, the site bore witness to dramatic cloud bursts, which carved a deep groove encircled by majestic mountains. These mountains remain adorned with snow and ice sheets, slowly melting to feed the deep groove, ultimately forming the pristine Sheshnag Lake. The lake derives its name from the revered Sheshanaga, the Nagaraja or King of Nāgas, a prominent figure in Hinduism’s creation mythology.

Chumathang: Nature’s healing haven

Location: Leh District, Ladakh, India

Chumathang village, situated on the banks of the Indus River in Ladakh’s Leh District, beckons travelers with its unique offerings. Known for its hot springs, this village boasts the distinction of hosting the first power station and government high school in the Changthang region, thanks to the guidance of Mr. Gonbo.

Medicinal Hot springs

Chumathang’s crowning glory is its therapeutic hot spring, drawing tourists from around the globe. Even local residents visit annually to harness the medicinal benefits of these rejuvenating waters. Additionally, an ancient monastery, more than 400 years old, graces the village, adding a touch of historical significance to the region.
