Prevent Pneumonia During Winter: People are more susceptible to colds, coughs, and other ailments in the winter. As our systems adjust to the unexpected temperature change, we are more likely to get sick. In addition to typical colds and coughs, pneumonia risk also increases during this season.

A buildup of fluid or mucus results in pneumonia, a lung infection. Your alveoli, which are tiny air sacs that carry oxygen from the air you breathe into your blood, are hampered by these deposits in their ability to do their jobs. Although pneumonia is not communicable, it can be brought on by a number of things, some of which are contagious.

How to Prevent Pneumonia?

  • The most efficient strategy to avoid pneumonia is to be vaccinated. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13 or Prevnar 13) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine are the two forms of pneumonia vaccinations (PPSV23 or Pneumovax 23).
  • Layer warm clothing on your body comfortably to control body temperature. Keep washing your hands to keep them clean and germ-free. Never touch your mouth, nose, or eyes with unwashed hands. Instead of running, use indoor exercises and indoor hobbies to improve your respiratory health. Exercise your breathing to maintain your lungs healthy. Make sure your house is spotless and allergen- and dust-free.
  • Anything that burns and is inhaled should be avoided, including cigarettes and vapes. The ability of your lungs to fight against infections, particularly viruses that cause pneumonia, can be hampered by tobacco use. In actuality, smokers should get the pneumococcal vaccine because they are a high-risk population.
  • Keep at least six feet apart from sick people to lower your risk of respiratory infections. Avoid embracing or shaking hands. Ask your doctor what precautions you should take if you have a cold to avoid it from turning into pneumonia. In order to fully recover from a cold or other sickness, make sure you receive enough sleep. To aid with congestion, drink plenty of fluids, and take immune-boosting vitamins like vitamin C and zinc.
