Christmas 2022: This holiday season, why don’t make homemade gingerbread cookies? This can bring a fun activity for your family too.
These cookies are the ideal way to welcome the season since they are tender and packed with toasty spices. Additionally, if you’re looking for homemade presents this holiday season, they are wonderful gifts to give to friends, family, and neighbours.
Here is a simple and easy recipe to make this holiday tradition at home.
Gingerbread Cookies: Ingredients
- 3/4 c. (1 1/2 sticks) butter, softened
- 3/4 c. packed brown sugar
- 2/3 c. molasses
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
- 3 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp. ground ginger
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. ground cloves
- 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
- 2″ piece fresh ginger, grated (optional)
- Zest of 1 orange (optional)
- 1/2 tsp. finely ground black pepper (optional)
- Sugar cookie icing and Sprinkles, for decorating
Gingerbread Cookies: Method
- Step 1: Butter, brown sugar, and molasses should be beaten for two minutes with a hand mixer in a big bowl. Beat in the egg and vanilla after adding them.
- Step 2: Flour, spices, baking soda, and salt should all be mixed in a medium bowl. Add the fresh ginger, orange zest, and black pepper (if using) gradually while running the mixer on low until the dough just comes together. (Avoid overmixing!)
- Step 3: Cut the dough in half, then form two discs. Wrap each in plastic wrap and chill for two to three hours, or until firm. (Alternatively, divide the dough in half and roll each piece to a thickness of 1/4″ between two sheets of parchment. Up till firm, chill.)
- Step 4: Set two big baking sheets in the oven and preheat to 350 degrees. Roll one disc of dough until it is 1/4 inch thick on a lightly dusted surface “thick. (Alternatively, remove both parchment sheets from the dough and return one of them underneath the dough.) With a 3D cutter, make gingerbread men “transfer to baking sheets after using a wide cutter.
- Step 5: Depending on the size of your cookie cutters, bake for 9 to 10 minutes, or until slightly puffed and firm. Allow them to cool on the baking sheets for five minutes, then move them to a cooling rack to finish cooling.
- Step 6: Repeat with the remaining dough disc. As desired, ice the cake and add sprinkles.
