Zomato CEO Responds To Criticism Of ‘Pure Veg Fleet’, Suggests Potential Rollback

Goyal explained the reasoning behind the introduction of the 'Pure Veg Fleet' service, stating that despite best efforts, sometimes food spills into delivery boxes

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal announced that the company might reconsider its newly launched ‘Pure Veg Mode’ and ‘Pure Veg Fleet’ if they continue to generate significant negative social consequences. This statement followed a heated online discussion sparked by the introduction of the ‘Pure Veg Fleet,’ with many expressing criticism of the initiative.

The ‘Pure Veg Mode’ feature on the app provides a selection of restaurants that exclusively serve pure vegetarian food, omitting any establishments that offer non-vegetarian food items.

Goyal explained the reasoning behind the introduction of the ‘Pure Veg Fleet’ service, stating that despite best efforts, sometimes food spills into delivery boxes. In such cases, the aroma of the previous order can transfer to the next one, potentially resulting in the subsequent order smelling of the previous one. Hence, the decision was made to segregate the fleet for vegetarian orders to ensure the purity of the aroma and experience for customers.

The Zomato CEO further emphasized that participation in the Veg delivery fleet wouldn’t discriminate based on the dietary preferences of delivery partners. Additionally, he pledged that if there are any substantial negative social consequences resulting from this change, the company would promptly revert it.

Meanwhile, Goyal stated that he had received an “overwhelmingly positive response” from numerous individuals, particularly from young non-vegetarian food consumers, who expressed that now their parents could also use Zomato.

Earlier today, Goyal unveiled the “Pure Veg Mode” along with a “Pure Veg Fleet” on Zomato, catering to customers with a strict vegetarian dietary preference who are concerned about food preparation methods. The announcement sparked a significant online debate, with individuals expressing varying opinions on the matter.

Dr. Ruchika Sharma, an X user, criticized Zomato’s “Pure Veg Mode” and “Pure Veg Fleet,” labeling them as blatant casteism. She argued that the notion of non-vegetarian food being polluting to vegetarian food is deeply rooted in casteism, highlighting concepts like the purity-pollution scale and the emphasis on “shuddh shakahari” (pure vegetarianism) as inherently casteist. She expressed disappointment in Zomato’s promotion of caste-based ideas. Several others echoed similar sentiments.

On the other hand, Joy, another user, took a different stance, urging people not to demean vegetarians in the debate surrounding Zomato’s Pure Veg Fleet. He emphasized that being vegetarian is a personal choice and belief, and advocated for empathy and accommodation towards vegetarians. Joy suggested that vegetarians should be respected and understood, as they might have specific preferences or beliefs regarding food.
