On Monday, Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan characterized the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as a legislation that promotes communal division, emphasizing that it will not be enforced in the southern state.
Vijayan affirmed in a statement that the government has consistently reiterated its stance against implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act in Kerala, emphasizing that the law discriminates against Muslim minorities. He reiterated that Kerala will remain united in its opposition to this divisive legislation.
Vijayan’s statement followed shortly after the Centre’s announcement of the implementation of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

The BJP-led government under Narendra Modi has long advocated for the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). With the issuance of the CAA rules, the Modi government is now able to proceed with granting Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014. This includes individuals belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi, and Christian communities.
The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has voiced its opposition to the Centre’s notification of rules for the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) before the Lok Sabha elections, labeling it as illegal. P K Kunhalikutty, the General Secretary of IUML, stated that they intend to challenge this action in court.
