The spouse of apprehended TMC leader Monobrata Jana has lodged an FIR against NIA officials, alleging assault and attempted outrage of her modesty following their forcible entry into her Bhupatinagar residence under the guise of conducting an investigation, as per a police official on Sunday.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested two primary conspirators, Balai Charan Maity and Manobrata Jana, on Saturday in connection with a 2022 blast case in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district, which resulted in the death of three individuals.

Monobrata Jana’s wife, Moni Jana, filed her complaint at the Bhupatinagar police station, accusing NIA officers of property vandalism during their raid on Saturday morning, the official noted.

“We have registered an FIR based on a woman’s complaint of assault by NIA officers. We are investigating the matter,” the police official informed PTI.

The complaint was appended with IPC Section 354, pertaining to assaulting a woman to outrage her modesty, the official added.

An NIA team reportedly faced aggression from a mob on Saturday during its attempt to apprehend two primary suspects in the 2022 blast case in Purba Medinipur district, prompting a political altercation. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused investigators of assaulting villagers.

The NIA reported an injury to one of its officers and damage to a vehicle during the attack in Bhupatinagar.

In the meantime, no arrests have been made regarding the assault on the NIA officers, who filed a complaint with the Bhupatinagar police station. “The matter is under investigation,” the official stated.

The assault on the NIA team drew parallels to a similar incident on January 5, when an Enforcement Directorate (ED) team was assaulted by a mob in North 24 Parganas district’s Sandeshkhali while conducting a search at the residence of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh, linked to alleged irregularities in the public distribution system.
