Veggies Market Soar! Onion To Tomato Spike Upto 81% In A Year

Retail inflation was under 5% in April, but it's expected to hit 5% in May. Food prices, like potatoes, onions, and tomatoes, have been going up, hinting that food inflation hasn't dropped.

Recently, news flashed about a rise in the cost of veg thalis across the country. In the past 15 days, wholesale onion prices have surged by up to 50 percent. Data from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs shows that in the last year, the prices of potatoes, onions, and tomatoes have jumped by as much as 81 percent. The average prices of these three vegetables have significantly increased nationwide.

According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs website, the average price of potatoes was Rs 18.88 per kg on April 30, 2023. By June 10, 2024, it had risen to Rs 30.57 per kg. This means potato prices have increased by Rs 11.69 per kg, a 62 percent rise over the past year. In June alone, the average price of potatoes has gone up by about one rupee per kg.

Onion prices have caused a lot of distress over the past year. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs website, the average price of onions was Rs 20.41 per kg on April 30, 2023. By June 10, it had risen to Rs 33.98 per kg. This represents a 66 percent increase, or Rs 13.57 per kg, in one year. In June alone, the average price of onions increased by Rs 1.86 per kg. In Delhi, onion prices have gone up by Rs 12.
