Uttar Pradesh: In a horrifying incident in Badaun, a man named Panna Lal was sentenced to life imprisonment after he attacked his pregnant wife with a sickle to determine the gender of their unborn child. This shocking event took place in September 2020 in the Civil Lines area of Badaun.

Panna Lal and his wife, Anita, had been married for 22 years and had five daughters. Their marriage was marred by frequent disputes, primarily because Panna Lal desperately wanted a son.

He repeatedly pressured Anita to bear a male child and threatened to divorce her and marry another woman if she failed to do so. Anita’s family was aware of the ongoing tension and had tried to mediate, but their efforts were in vain.

The situation reached a tragic climax on the day of the incident when another argument erupted over the gender of the unborn baby. In a fit of rage, Panna Lal threatened to cut open Anita’s stomach to find out if she was carrying a boy or a girl.

When Anita resisted, he escalated his threats to killing her. Overcome by fury, he attacked her with a sickle, making a deep cut in her stomach while she was eight months pregnant. Anita’s intestines were left hanging from the severe wound.

Anita managed to escape to the street, where her brother, who worked nearby, heard her screams and came to her aid. Seeing her brother, Panna Lal fled the scene. Anita was immediately taken to the hospital. Although she survived the brutal attack, her unborn baby boy did not.

In court, Panna Lal claimed that Anita had self-inflicted the wounds to falsely accuse him due to a property dispute with her brothers. Despite his defense, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to life in prison, providing a semblance of justice for the brutal attack on his wife and unborn child .
