The Chief Minister’s Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana in Uttar Pradesh aims to benefit the economically weaker sections. However, instances of fraudulent activities associated with this scheme are frequently in the headlines. A recent incident from Maharajganj district highlights this issue, where in the greed of getting a reward, some middlemen made brother and sister exchange vows. It’s worth noting that under the Chief Minister Group Marriage Scheme, married couples receive household items and a sum of Rs 35 thousand.

On March 5, 38 couples tied the knot under the Chief Minister’s Mass Marriage Scheme in Lakshmipur block of Maharajganj.

During this event, some intermediaries convinced a woman who had been married for a year to participate in a second marriage to avail the benefits of this scheme.

However, on the day of the wedding, the intended groom failed to show up at the mandap. In an unexpected turn of events, the intermediaries made arrangements for her brother to take the groom’s place and conducted the marriage ceremony between the brother and sister with all customary rituals.

What is the UP Police’s take on it?

After knowing the incident, the UP administration became very alert. After knowing the situation, the Area Development Officer (BDO) of Maharajganj took immediate action to retrieve the household items and imposed limitations on the reward amount. District Magistrate Anunay Jha stated that they have not received any formal complaint yet, but they are currently conducting an investigation and will take appropriate measures accordingly.
