Ujjwal Nikam_ From Kasab's 'Biryani Story' To Sanjay Dutt's Trial, Know All About The BJP Candidate

Lawyer Ujjwal Nikam, who represented the Mahajan family in the case following the murder of former Union Minister Pramod Mahajan, has replaced current Lok Sabha MP Poonam Mahajan, daughter of Pramod Mahajan, for the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha seat due to reports of anti-incumbency against her.

Nikam gained prominence by handling several high-profile cases such as the 1993 blast case, the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case involving Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, the 2011 triple blasts, the Shakti Mills gangrape cases, and the Kopardi and Ahmednagar rape and murder cases. Nikam rose to fame primarily due to his work on the 1993 blast and 26/11 attack cases.

Ujjwal Nikam was related to Kasab’s ‘Biryani Story’

During the UPA-2 regime, authorities hanged Ajmal Kasab, the sole terrorist captured after the 26/11 attacks. Nikam managed the trial against the accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks and initially alleged that Kasab was served biryani in prison, sparking significant criticism against the Congress-NCP state government. However, at a global counter-terrorism conference in Jaipur in 2015, Ujjwal Nikam disclosed that he concocted this narrative to undermine the growing emotional support for Kasab.

During the chain of bomb blasts that rocked Mumbai in 1993, police arrested over 100 associates linked to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Ujjal Nikam played a crucial role in ensuring actor Sanjay Dutt received punishment in connection with the bomb blasts.

During the trial of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, Nikam would exit the courtroom after daily proceedings and update the media. On one occasion, as Sanjay Dutt left the court after proceedings, many reporters rushed to get his statement. When Nikam emerged to address the media, he discovered that most reporters had gathered around Sanjay Dutt. This led Nikam to caution Sanjay Dutt to exit the court premises only after he had left to avoid such situations.
