Karnataka Judge Controversial Remarks: The Supreme Court on Friday sought a report from the Karnataka High Court over some inflammatory remarks by Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda at a recent hearing. Justice Srishananda referred to a Muslim-majority area in Bengaluru as “Pakistan” and made a sexist remark against a woman lawyer while speaking during a landlord-tenant case.

With emphasis on framing clear guidelines on remarks of constitutional judges in the courts, a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices S Khanna, B R Gavai, S Kant, and H Roy felt it is all the more necessary to ensure that judges’ remarks don’t dent the decorum the courts are supposed to maintain as social media keeps on tracking and echo-ing courtroom proceedings.
