The Supreme Court dismissed the petitions by the CBI, State of Maharashtra, and Bureau of Immigration that challenged the Bombay High Court’s decision to quash the LOCs (lookout circular) issued against Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik, and their father, Lt Colonel Indrajit Chakraborty after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
A bench consisting of Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan dismissed the plea from Maharashtra, the CBI, and the Bureau of Immigration, which sought to overturn the Bombay High Court’s decision to cancel the lookout circular. The bench deemed the plea “frivolous,” suggesting it was filed solely due to the accused’s high-profile status. In February, the Bombay High Court had quashed the circular, pointing out the lack of justification for its issuance and that it was not properly reviewed as per the Consolidated Guidelines.
Background of the Case
Rhea Chakraborty was reportedly in a relationship with Sushant Singh Rajput when he died by suicide in June 2020, with official postmortem reports confirming death by asphyxia due to hanging.
In August 2020, LOCs were issued by the CBI as part of the investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. Following Rajput’s passing, his family filed an FIR in Patna, Bihar, which led to the CBI taking charge of the investigation.

High Court’s Ruling and Supreme Court Appeal
In February, the Bombay High Court ruled in favor of quashing the LOCs, based on a petition filed by the Chakraborty family. Disagreeing with the High Court’s decision, the CBI appealed to the Supreme Court, which has now upheld the High Court’s ruling.
Relief for the Chakraborty Family
This decision brings much-needed relief to Rhea Chakraborty and her family, who have been under continuous scrutiny for their alleged involvement in the case surrounding Sushant Singh Rajput’s untimely death.
The dismissal of the LOCs signifies a turning point in the legal matters faced by Rhea and her family, as the Supreme Court’s decision now stands final on the matter.
