SC cancels release of GN Sainba, 5 others in UAPA case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Saturday put a stay on Bombay High Court’s verdict to acquit Delhi University Professor GN Saibaba and five others for alleged links with Maoist.

A day earlier, a Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court had acquitted them in a 2017 case where they were awarded life imprisonment after a bench Of Gadchiroli Court had convicted them. Saibaba then, challenged the order in the High court.

On Friday, the Bombay High Court ordered to release Saibaba and rest of the convicts unless they are booked under another case.

However, one of the convicts died during the hearing was pending in the court.

The Gadchiroli Court had found Saibaba, a journalist and a student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) linked with Moaist. It was alleged that they were involved in activities that could start a war against the nation.
