Sudarshan Setu: 5 Facts About India’s Longest Cable-Stayed Bridge

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 'Sudarshan Setu', a bridge connecting the Okha mainland to the Beyt Dwarka island. Costing approximately Rs 980 crore, the 2.5 km cable-stayed bridge stands as the longest in India. Originally named the 'Signature Bridge,' District Magistrate (DM) GT Pandya informed news agency PTI that it has been officially renamed 'Sudarshan Setu' or Sudarshan Bridge.

During his two-day visit to Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Sudarshan Setu’, a bridge connecting the Okha mainland to the Beyt Dwarka island. Costing approximately Rs 980 crore, the 2.5 km cable-stayed bridge stands as the longest in India.

What Is Byet Dwarka? 

Beyt Dwarka, an island near the Okha port, lies about 30 km from Dwarka town, home to the famous Dwarkadhish temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. Previously, devotees visiting the temple on Beyt Dwarka could only travel by boat during daylight hours. With the new bridge, officials stated that travel will be accessible at all times.

Facts About Sudarshan Setu

  • The Sudarshan Setu, a four-lane bridge spanning 27.20 meters in width, boasts 2.50-meter wide footpaths on either side.
  • Recognized as India’s longest cable-stayed bridge
  • It incorporates solar panels atop the footpaths, generating one megawatt of electricity.
  • Enhancing its aesthetic appeal, the bridge features a pedestrian pathway adorned with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and depictions of Lord Krishna.
  • Beyond its structural significance, the Okha-Beyt Dwarka Signature Bridge is expected to serve as a prominent tourist attraction.

When Did The Project Start? 

Originally named the ‘Signature Bridge,’ DM GT Pandya informed PTI that it has been renamed as ‘Sudarshan Setu’. PM Modi laid the foundation stone for this project in October 2017, with construction costs amounting to ₹978 crore.

PM Modi To Inaugurate AIIMS In Gujarat

On Sunday, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the state’s inaugural AIIMS in Rajkot. This establishment will be one of five AIIMS facilities dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister on February 25th from Rajkot, as stated by the minister.

Costing Rs 1,195 crore and sprawling across 201 acres,  AIIMS is a state-of-the-art hospital equipped with 720 beds. During the inauguration on February 25th, the Prime Minister will unveil 23 operating theaters, a 30-bed AYUSH block, and 250 beds for IPD. The remaining beds will be gradually made available for use.
