As the Kashmir Valley grapples with biting cold temperatures, the season’s first snowfall has graced the plains of South Kashmir. Light snow began falling today in several areas, including Kulgam, Qazigund, Kokarnaag, Achabal, and the main town of Anantnag, bringing a picturesque winter landscape to the region.
However, the fresh snowfall has led to the closure of key routes, including the Mughal Road and Sinthan Pass. Authorities have suspended all vehicular movement in these areas due to hazardous driving conditions caused by the slippery roads.
A snow clearance team reported that the onset of snowfall created perilous conditions on the mountain passes. Officials have urged motorists to refrain from traveling on these routes until further notice to ensure public safety.
“The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), which oversees road maintenance, will provide clearance once the routes are deemed safe for travel,” officials stated.
Sinthan Top, a mountain pass that connects South Kashmir’s Breng Valley with Kishtwar district, and the Mughal Road, which links Shopian with Poonch, are vital corridors for local transportation and trade.
The weatherman has predicted snowfall in parts of Kashmir Valley till tomorrow afternoon, after which the dry weather with cold wave and minus temperature will remain continue in Kashmir till 02 Jan 2025.
