Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused Congress of involvement in the Rs 5,000-crore drug bust in Delhi, alleging that the party is using drug money to finance its election campaigns. Addressing a rally in Maharashtra, Modi remarked, “Drugs worth thousands of crores have been seized in Delhi. The main accused in this drug racket is a Congress leader. Congress wants to push the youth towards drugs and use that money to contest and win elections.”
Delhi Drug Bust: Cocaine and Marijuana Seized
On October 2, the Delhi Police uncovered over 560 kilograms of cocaine and 40 kilograms of hydroponic marijuana from a warehouse in Mahipalpur, South Delhi. Valued at around Rs 5,620 crore, this haul represents one of the largest drug seizures in the country, raising serious concerns about the extent of drug trafficking in metropolitan areas.
Amit Shah Highlights Government’s “Zero Tolerance” Policy
Following the bust, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reaffirmed the government’s strong stance on drug-related crimes. He emphasized the Modi government’s commitment to a “zero tolerance” approach to drugs, contrasting it with the Congress’s alleged involvement. Shah stated that while the government is working to guide the youth toward education, sports, and innovation, the Congress party is allegedly leveraging its political influence to enable drug trafficking.
Congress Leader Tushar Goyal at the Center of the Controversy
The primary accused in the drug racket, Tushar Goyal, was revealed to have past connections with Congress, deepening the political controversy. Goyal earlier served for the RTI Cell in the Delhi Pradesh Congress until 2022 as the chairman. His social media presence, where he used the alias “Dikki Goyal,” included photos with prominent Congress leaders like Lok Sabha MP Deepender Singh Hooda and Haryana unit chief Uday Bhan.

However, Congress has denied any current link with Goyal. In a post on X, the party clarified that Goyal was removed from his position in October 2022 for anti-party activities and that he has had no association with Congress since then.
Smuggling Operation and Plans for Distribution
Investigations have revealed that the cocaine was smuggled into Delhi via road routes from different Indian states, while the hydroponic marijuana was sourced from Phuket, Thailand. The accused reportedly intended to distribute the drugs at concerts, rave parties, and in upscale areas of Delhi and other metro cities. The bust has not only shed light on international drug smuggling operations but also triggered a fierce political debate as Congress and BJP trade accusations ahead of upcoming elections.
