INS Vikrant: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will commission India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant at the Cochin Shipyard in Kochi today.

PM Modi will also unveil the new insignia of the Indian Navy, setting aside the colonial past and in line with the rich Indian maritime heritage.

India-made INS Vikrant manufactured at Cochin Shipyard

The aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, designed by the Indian Navy’s in-house Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, is built with state-of-the-art automation facilities. It is the largest ship ever built in the maritime history of India. The indigenous aircraft carrier is named after its illustrious predecessor, India’s first aircraft carrier. Who played an important role in the 1971 war.

MSMEs involved in manufacturing

Indigenous equipment and machinery has been installed in large quantity on board INS Vikrant. This includes the major industrial houses of the country as well as more than 100 MSMEs. With the appointment of Vikrant, India will have two operational aircraft carriers, which will further strengthen the country’s maritime ties. According to the Indian Navy, the 262-metre long carrier weighs around 45,000 tonnes which is much larger and more advanced than its predecessor.

INS Vikrant equipped with state-of-the-art facilities

Talking about INS Vikrant, Vice Admiral Humpiholi said, ” INS Vikrant has a mix of around 30 aircraft. It can fly the MiG-29K fighter aircraft in anti-air, anti-surface and land attack roles. It will also be capable of operating Kamov 31, which is an early air warning helicopter, recently inducted but not yet commissioned. And the MH-60R which is a multi-role helicopter as well as our indigenous ALH. It weighs around 45,000 tonnes which is definitely the largest warship in the Indian Navy’s inventory.”
