Indian leaders in Central Hall

It was a moment of mixed emotions for all the Members of Parliament from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha who were present in the central hall to witness the red-letter day and commemorate the rich legacy of the old Parliament of India. The Central Hall has been witness to the transfer of power from British to India i.e. Bharat.

Modi for Nehru

“Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha together have passed more than 4,000 laws. The echo of Nehru ji’s Stroke of Midnight speech will inspire us. It is also in this House where Atal Bihari Vajpayee said governments will come and go, but this country will stay”, said PM Modi as he listed key milestones of the old Parliament’s history.

He also said: The time for us to get caught up in smaller issues is over. First of all, we will have to meet the goal of becoming Aatmanirbhar Bharat… It is the need of the hour, it is everyone’s duty. Parties do not come in its way. Sirf dil chahiye, desh ke liye chahiye.

Kharge recalls history

Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge said, “We have all gathered here today to commemorate the rich legacy of the Parliament of India in this historic Central Hall. It is in this very Central Hall that the Constituent Assembly held its sitting from 1946 to 1949. Today we humbly recall the contributions made by Dr Rajendra Prasad, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and BR Ambedkar.”

Maneka Gandhi: the senior-most LS parliamentarian

“This is a historic day today and I am proud to be a part of this historic moment. We are going to a New Building and hopefully, this grand edifice will reflect the aspirations of a new Bharat. Today, I have been entrusted with the responsibility of addressing this esteemed assembly as the most senior parliamentarian in the Lok Sabha… I have spent most of my adult life in this institution and I have seen 7 Prime Ministers and the shaping of grand history.”

No nation can have two parliaments so what would happen to the old one? What will it be called now?
