The Kerala government has decided to lift containment measures and related restrictions in northern Kozhikode district, as no new cases of Nipah virus have been reported since September 16.

In a Facebook announcement on Tuesday, District Collector A Geetha confirmed that all schools situated within containment zones would reopen, resuming regular classes starting Wednesday.

Despite this positive development, the collector emphasized the importance of continued vigilance against the virus. She urged the public to follow precautionary measures, like maintaining social distancing, wearing masks, and using hand sanitiser regularly.

Since the Nipah virus outbreak was declared in the state on September 12, all educational institutions in the district have remained closed since September 14, with online classes being conducted in the interim.

Students have been advised to wear masks and carry hand sanitisers when returning to their educational institutions.
To date, a total of six confirmed Nipah virus cases have been reported, resulting in two fatalities. The initial fatality on August 30 was identified as the index case, from whom subsequent infections originated.

As of September 24, health authorities reported 915 individuals under observation, with none classified as high-risk. A total of 377 samples have been tested, yielding 363 negative results.

This significant progress indicates a positive trend in managing the Nipah virus outbreak in Kozhikode district, offering hope for a return to normalcy.
