On Wednesday, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda instructed officials to ensure that all hospitals are ready to deliver optimal healthcare to those affected by the heatwave.

During the review of the heatwave situation and preparedness of central government hospitals, Nadda mandated the establishment of dedicated heatwave units in those hospitals.

Nadda’s directives to his officials coincide with scorching heat affecting large swathes of the country. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), regions in North India can expect continued severe heatwave conditions on Wednesday, gradually easing as a western disturbance moves towards northwest India.

Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital recorded five deaths suspected to be caused by heatstroke. Meanwhile, at least 12 individuals, predominantly daily wage laborers, are reportedly in critical condition, requiring ventilator support as they fight for their lives.

Dr. Ajay Shukla, the medical superintendent of the hospital, informed “We have admitted a total of 22 patients, with five fatalities suspected to be due to heatstroke. Currently, 12 patients are in critical condition and on ventilator support. The majority of these patients are laborers who work under extreme conditions.”

According to IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar, Delhi-NCR is likely to experience temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius, with the monsoon expected to arrive by June 30. He also mentioned the possibility of dust storms and light rainfall.

According to data from the State Load Dispatch Centre, at 3:22 PM on Tuesday, Delhi recorded its highest-ever peak power demand of 8,647 MW. The ongoing heatwave has exacerbated the water shortage in the city, compelling residents to rely on water tankers for their daily requirements.
