Indore temple collapse: The death toll in the Indore stepwell collapse incident increased to 35 on Friday and rescue operation still underway to trace missing people, according to the local officials.

The cemented slab constructed on the top of an stepwell or “Bawdi” caved in during a Havan which was held on the occasion of Ram Navami at Beleshwar Mahadev jhulelal temple in the city on Thursday. This sudden collapse od slab plunging several devotees into the ‘bawdi’.

the temple is sitauted at Patel nagar, where the tagedegy took place, had been built after covering the sqaure-shaped stepwell of nearly 20ftX20ft size about 40 years ago.

“Our search operation, being carried out with the help of Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), is nearing completion. So far, 35 bodies have been recovered from the well,” Indore District Magistrate Dr Ilayaraja told reporters from the site of the incident.

Bodies of all people, except one, whose name is mentioned in the list of missing persons, have been fetched out so far, he added.

Earlier, 16 injured people have been admitted to the hospital, while two were sent home, according to Indore Divisional (Revenue) Pawan Kumar Sharma.

According to sources, the process of recovering bodies and sending them to hospital for post-mortem has been intensified after 11 pm on Thursday.

A joint team of the Army and the NDRF go down into the well with the support of crane and trolley for finding bodies.

The rescue operation was disturbed in the beginning as the temple was constructed in a narrow space and the wall was broken to lower a pipe to pump out water from the well, officials informed.

According to eyewitnesses, there was a huge crowd of devotees at the temple on the occasion of Ram navami and its floor collapsed as it could not bear the load.
