On Hiraba’s birthday on June 18 this year, the Prime Minister wrote in his blog, “There is no other word in the dictionary for mother. It includes a whole range of emotions. Love, patience, faith and a whole lot more. All over the world, regardless of country or region, children have a special affection for their mothers. A mother not only gives birth to her children but also shapes their mind, their personality and their confidence. Mothers selflessly sacrifice their personal needs and aspirations.”

In his blog, the Prime Minister described his mother Hiraba as an extraordinary woman. She had said that she lost her mother when she was very young and faced many difficulties in life.

Hiraba was the eldest in her family

PM Modi wrote, “My mother was born in Visnagar, Mehsana in Gujarat, which is very close to my hometown Vadnagar. She was the eldest child in her family and after marriage became the eldest daughter-in-law. To take care of the whole family and manage all the work in childhood. Even after marriage, he took up all these responsibilities. Despite heavy responsibilities and everyday struggles, the mother held the whole family together with calmness and poise.

PM Modi also recalled some special moments of his childhood that he had spent with his mother. He recalled the many sacrifices made by his mother when he was growing up and mentioned various qualities that shaped his mind, personality and confidence.

He recalled the small house in Vadnagar where he lived with his parents and siblings. His mother not only used to do all the household work herself, but she also worked in other’s house to supplement the meager income of the house. She said that she used to wash utensils in some houses and used to take out time to spin the charkha to meet the household expenses.

Prime Minister Modi recalled that during the rains our roof used to leak and water used to fill the house. Mother used to put buckets and utensils under the leakage to collect rain water. He also wrote that his mother made him realize that one can learn without being formally educated.

‘Mother is the biggest teacher of my life’

Prime Minister Modi wrote in the blog that when I became the Chief Minister of Gujarat, I wanted to publicly honor all my teachers. I thought that mother is the biggest teacher of my life and I should also respect her. It is also mentioned in our scriptures that no one is greater than the other. Mother – ‘Nasti Matri Samo Guru’.

Considering the very simple lifestyle of his mother, PM Modi wrote that his mother has no property in her name. I have never seen her wearing gold jewelry and she is not interested either.

In the blog post, PM Modi spoke about the only two instances when his mother was with him in public. For the first time, it was at a public function in Ahmedabad when he applied tilak on his forehead after his return from Srinagar, where he hoisted the national flag at Lal Chowk, completing the Ekta Yatra. The second was when PM Modi was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Gujarat for the first time in 2001.
