Dehradun: A heavy avalanche hit Mount Sumeru behind the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district on Sunday morning. The scene scared the pilgrims visiting the Himalayan shrine.

However, Rudraprayag District Disaster Management Officer NK Rajwar said that there was no loss of life or property in the incident.

In a video clip that has been widely shared online, some pilgrims can be seen walking down the huge snow mountain while panicking and running towards the temple, while others are in awe of the phenomena.

“The sector officer at Kedarnath temple informed us that an avalanche hit Mount Sumeru around 7:30 a.m. The incident took place near the source of river Saraswati River, 3-4 km from the temple,” NK Rajwar told TOI.

He said that there was no damage due to snowfall and the water level of the Saraswati River did not rise.
