Gulzar is recognized as one of the finest Urdu poets of the present time, acclaimed for his work in Hindi cinema. He has previously been honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu in 2002, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013, and the Padma Bhushan in 2004, among others. Additionally, he has received five National Film Awards for various works in Hindi cinema.

Based in Chitrakoot, the founder and head of Tulsi Peeth, Rambhadracharya is a prominent Hindu spiritual leader, educator, and author of over 100 books. Despite being blind since birth, Jagadguru Rambhadracharya is a profound scholar of Sanskrit language and Vedas-Puranas.
The Jnanpith committee stated in a statement that the decision to award the prestigious prize to renowned authors in two languages, Sanskrit literature Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and renowned Urdu litterateur Shri Gulzar, for the year 2023 has been made. In 2022, Goan author Damodar Mauzo was honored with this prestigious award.
