eGazette Website Crashes After CAA Notification

The eGazette website crashed shortly after the Center’s announcement regarding the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday. The regulations pertaining to the CAA are set to be published on the eGazette platform. This notification from the government precedes the Election Commission of India’s forthcoming announcement regarding the Lok Sabha elections schedule.

Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will be notifying today, the Rules under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA-2019). These rules, called the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 will enable the persons eligible under CAA-2019 to apply for grant of Indian citizenship. (1/2)

Applications will be accepted online, with a dedicated web portal established for this purpose.

The Citizenship Amendment Act, passed by Parliament on December 11, 2019, seeks to expedite the process of obtaining Indian citizenship for migrants originating from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. These migrants belong to the Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities and entered India on or before December 31, 2014, fleeing religious persecution in their countries of origin.

Even after four years had passed since its approval in Parliament, the implementation of the CAA had not materialized due to the ongoing process of finalizing the associated rules and procedures.
