New Delhi: A much controversial bill, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, also known as the Delhi Service Bill, was successfully passed in the Lok Sabha.

However, this success was accompanied by a huge ruckus created by the opposition, resulting in opposition MPs walking out of the House in protest against the bill.

The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, grants the Central Government the power to make rules related to the affairs of Delhi’s government, including the functions, terms, and conditions of service for officers and employees.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah initiated the debate on the Delhi Services Bill in Parliament on August 1. He appealed to the opposition leaders to consider the interests of Delhi, regardless of their political affiliations or alliances.

Shah emphasized that the bill should not be used as a political tool to secure election victories or gain support from any party.

During the voting process in Lok Sabha, the opposition caused disruptions, with AAP’s lone Lok Sabha MP, Sushil Kumar Rinku, tearing papers belonging to the ruling party’s MPs. As a consequence of his actions, Sushil Kumar has been suspended for the entire session.

This move has sparked controversy, with the opposition expressing strong dissent and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accusing the BJP of betraying their promise of granting full statehood to Delhi.

Delhi CM Kejriwal alleged that this bill is passed to enslave the people of the national capital.

Taking the matter to Twitter, Kejriwal wrote, “Today in the Lok Sabha, I heard Amit Shah ji speaking on the bill which snatches away the rights of the people of Delhi. They do not have a single valid argument to support the bill. Just talking nonsense here and there. They also know that they are doing wrong.”

“This bill is a bill to enslave the people of Delhi. There is a bill that makes them helpless and helpless. INDIA will never let this happen,” Delhi CM further wrote.

The next step for the Delhi Service Bill is its introduction in the Rajya Sabha on Friday at 12 noon. If the bill manages to pass in the Rajya Sabha, it will officially become a law.

Meanwhile, earlier, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor termed the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 as ‘shameful Bill’ saying that this is basically going to undo the principle of Parliamentary accountability.
