A civil services aspirant from Old Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi, died by suicide, reportedly struggling with depression and the stress of the examination process, police said on Saturday. In her note, she appealed to the government to “reduce corruption in government exams” and “increase job opportunities,” and voiced worries about escalating housing rents.

In her suicide note, Anjali, the student, described her struggle with “life’s problems” and a “lack of peace.” She took her own life on July 21, just days before three UPSC candidates perished in a flooding incident at Rau’s Study Circle, a coaching center in the Old Rajinder Nagar area.

According to reports, Anjali was paying Rs 15,000 for her room, but the rent was suddenly increased to Rs 18,000.

In her suicide note, the aspirant expressed deep frustration with life, feeling overwhelmed by ongoing problems and a lack of peace. Despite trying various methods to alleviate her depression and consulting a doctor, she was unable to find relief. In her suicide note, Anjali mentioned that her sole ambition was to pass the UPSC exam on her first attempt, and she acknowledged her instability. She also noted that she expected her death to become “breaking news.”

The student from Maharashtra was preparing for the UPSC exam while staying in a rented room in Old Rajinder Nagar, a key area for Civil Services coaching in Delhi.

In her note, Anjali requested the government to address issues such as reducing scams in government exams and creating more job opportunities, highlighting the struggles faced by many youths in finding employment.

She also expressed concern about the high costs of Paying Guest (PGs)  and hostels, mentioning that she had discussed the rising PG rents with her friend Shweta before her death. Anjali criticized the high rents, stating that they were unaffordable for many students.

Delhi Police have registered a case and are currently investigating the matter.
