Kuala Lumpur: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commenced his three-day official visit to Malaysia on Sunday. He arrived in Malaysia’s capital city Kuala Lumpur to hold bilateral talks and strengthen the defence cooperation between the two countries.

The purpose of Singh’s visit is to deepen the bilateral ties and enhance the strategic partnership between India and Malaysia. During his stay, he held discussions and exchange views with Dato’ Seri Mohamad Hasan, the Defence Minister of Malaysia, on regional and global issues of shared interest. Singh will also have the opportunity to meet Malaysia’s Prime Minister, YB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, to further strengthen diplomatic relations.

Rajnath Singh’s visit will boost bilateral ties in different sectors

The Ministry of Defence highlighted the common interest of both nations in promoting peace and prosperity in the region. India and Malaysia share a robust and multifaceted relationship, particularly in strategic areas such as defence and security. The visit aims to build upon the existing ties and explore opportunities for collaboration in various sectors.

The strategic partnership between India and Malaysia was established during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Malaysia in 2015, and both countries remain committed to working towards its vision. This visit by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh further signifies the importance India places on fostering strong ties with Malaysia.

Notably, in April of this year, India and Malaysia agreed to settle trade using Indian rupees, a move aimed at safeguarding Indian trade amidst the impact of the Ukraine crisis. This decision further demonstrates the growing economic cooperation between the two countries.

Earlier, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan met with Malaysia’s Human Resources Minister V Sivakumar in June. Both parties agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding, which will facilitate the entry of Indian workers into various sectors in Malaysia, further strengthening the people-to-people ties between the nations.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Malaysia is expected to enhance bilateral cooperation, deepen diplomatic relations, and explore new avenues for collaboration between India and Malaysia. The visit underscores the significance of the strategic partnership and the commitment of both nations to foster stronger ties across various domains.
