A significant confrontation erupted among Congress supporters in Thrissur, Kerala, on Friday following the loss of the party’s candidate K Muraleedharan in the recent Lok Sabha elections.

Tension had been building up within the Thrissur District Congress Committee (DCC) since June 4 when the results were announced, and anonymous posters appeared blaming DCC chief Jose Valloor and former Thrissur MP T N Prathapan for the defeat.

One of the posters stated, “No seat for Prathapan even in a ward” and called for “Jose Vallur to resign”. On Friday, tensions escalated when Valloor confronted Suresh, a worker aligned with DCC secretary Sajeevan Kuttiyachira, about the posters that had been put up.

The situation escalated further when Kuttiyachira, a supporter of Muraleedharan, and Suresh were reportedly assaulted by DCC chief Vallur and his supporters, leading to a full-scale brawl between the factions. In protest, Kuttiyachira staged a sit-in in front of a portrait of Congress leader K Karunakaran on the ground floor of the DCC office.

The conflict intensified when Muraleedharan’s supporters also arrived at the office. On the day of the election results, K Muraleedharan had criticized both the district and state leadership, claiming that no leaders had come to campaign for him.

It’s worth noting that Suresh Gopi of the BJP defeated K Muraleedharan of the Congress by a significant margin of over 74,000 votes, with the CPI candidate being his closest rival
