New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Thursday will be meeting victims of violence that hit Manipur for over 60 days ago and followed the same incidents almost everyday since.

Through a Twitter post, the Congress informed that the party’s former chief will visit two districts of Manipur — Churachandpur and Bishnupur.

The Congress leader will be spending two days in the north-eastern state of Manipur to visit relief camps where people who were displaced during the violence took refuge. Gandhi will also meet leaders of civil society groups.

Manipur has been witnessing a series of violent clashes everyday following the conflict between Kuki and Meitei communities. As per media reports, at least 100 people have lost their lives, while over 400 were wounded.

Rahul Gandhi’s visit in Manipur amid the Opposition’s demand state Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s resignation as the latter could not control bring the situation to normalcy in the state.

In a Twitter post, senior Congress leader KC Venugopal said the state had been “burning for nearly two months” and “desperately needs a healing touch so that society can move from conflict to peace”.

The clashes in the two communities were started in May. Angry mob wrecked churches, houses and temples in the state, forcing over 60,000 people to leave their homes.

Nearly, 40,000 security forces were deployed to quell the violence. Prior to Gandhi’s visit, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had visited Manipur.
