New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tuesday launched an attack at Congress-led Karnataka government over hike of power tariff rates to accommodate the Gruha Jyoti scheme.
“Karnataka Congress ka dhokha,” said national spokesperson of BJP, Shehzad Poonawala while calling out the Congress government’s new scheme that pertains to provide free electricity upto 200 units.
In a brief post on Twitter, Poonawala called Congress’ policy a fraud and said, “The customers will be eligible for only 10% more units of their monthly usage average. WHAT A FRAUD!”

Tariff hiked by KERC not Karnataka Govt: Siddaramaiah
On May 12, the Karnataka electricity regulatory commission (KERC) had announced to raise the rate of 70 paise per unit of electricity in the state. Following which, the Siddaramaiah-led state regime was cornered over the issue.

However, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that the KERC took the decision of increasing power tariff and not his government. “We did not decide to hike the electricity tariff. There is Karnataka electricity regulatory authority, which has decided. It had been decided in the past. We have only implemented it,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Opposition in the state, BJP hit the road to protest against the Congress-led Karnataka government on the issue of power tariff hike, saying that the act has showed the true colours of the grand-old party.
The Karnataka CM on Monday issued guidelines to avail free electricity under the Gruha Jyothi scheme. For which, consumers will have to register on the Seva Sindhu portal.
The free electricity will be provided for residential usage only. The policy does not cover commercial usage. The scheme will come into effect in July. People don’t have to pay electricity bills from August if they consume equal or fewer units of their monthly average units.

Congress did the same in Himachal: Poonawala in current tweet
The BJP spokesperson said Congress had done the same in Himachal Pradesh where the grand-old party had announced to provide free electricity upto 300 untis. After which, they increased the rates of electricity.
He added that the Congress also betrayed people in the Himachal Pradesh by not fulfilling a promise to provide of Rs 1500 per month to women yet.
The Congress had made these promises while campaining for Himachal Assembly Polls in 2022, in which the party registered victory after winning on 40 seats out of 68.
“Congress means Dhokha. Till date they have not fulfilled kisan karz maafi in Rajasthan. Will the Rahul Jodi media ask Congress and Rahul about this? I doubt it,” asked Poonawala.
