New Delhi: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge Monday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi after China claimed as many as 11 places of India’s Arunachal Pradesh as its own territory.

Kharge blamed PM Modi of giving “clean chit” to China after Galvan valley incident. He posted on Twitter, “Arunachal Pradesh is and will remain an integral part of India. After Galvan, the country is facing the consequences of Modi ji giving a clean chit to China.”

The Congress chief mentioned that this marks the time when China “dared to “rename” our areas in Arunachal Pradesh. April 21, 2017 — 6 places, 30 December 2021 — 15 places and on 3 April 2023 — 11 places.”

China’s claims

The Chinese government on Sunday released a set of 11 places and a map attached to it, showing places of Arunachal Pradesh as parts of southern Tibetian region that China calls Zangnan. The list also contained the name of a town that is near to the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, Itanagar.

“The official names of the 11 places were released by the ministry on April 2, which also gave precise coordinates, including two residential areas, five mountain peaks, two rivers and two other areas. It also listed the category of places’ names and their subordinate administrative districts,” Global Times reported.

This is China’s third attempt to emphasize its claim over Indian territories since 2020 after the People’s Liberation Army tried to change the status quo in the area. The grudge between two Asian countries during the Galwan clash when India lost its 20 soldiers.

Despite several attempts to cool off the tension at the Line of Actual Control at eastern Ladakh and diplomatic talks, there appeared to be no relief.

India ‘Rejects This Outright’

Meanwhile, India has strongly rejected the claims saying that Arunachal Pradesh will always be an integral part of India.

“We have seen such reports. This is not the first time China has made such an attempt. We reject this outright. Arunachal Pradesh is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Attempts to assign invented names will not alter this reality,” Bagchi said.
